The Matarromera Crianza, a Spanish wine made in the Ribera del Duero, has been chosen among the 100 best wines in the world according to the latest ranking published by the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator. It is, moreover, the only wine produced in this Designation of Origin present in the list.

Each year, the Wine Spectator editors prepare an exhaustive report on the wines sampled over the past 12 months and select the Top 100 wines in the world, based on quality, value, availability and the sensations they convey. This annual list celebrates successful wineries, regions and vintages from around the world since 1988. The process is very thorough and objective; all wines are blind tasted by a diverse group of professionals, who taste the wines and evaluate them based on quality criteria (based on its score), its value (based on price) and availability (based on the number of cases produced). Only the best wines make it into the World Top 100.

Wine Spectator is the most prestigious magazine in the wine world at an international level. Over 3 million copies of its print edition are sold and its web platform, winespectator.com, is a worldwide benchmark. Wine Spectator experts travel across all the wine regions to learn about, value and bring the wines of any location to its millions of readers.

Matarromera Crianza

For this iconic winery, it is not simply a wine. Its first vintage, in 1994, won the title of Best Wine in the World in the international competition of the Spanish Interprofessional Wine Organisation (OIVE), held in Turkey. Since then, this 100% Tempranillo, is one of the hallmarks of Bodega Matarromera. Its character is marked by the identity inherent to Matarromera's historical vineyards, with limestone and clay soils and a harsh climate with large temperature fluctuations. It is made with Tempranillo grapes grown on vineyards very close to the Duero River, producing a high quality grape. They are located in the municipalities of Olivares and Valbuena de Duero, in Valladolid, one of the most ideal areas for viticulture in Spain.

Matarromera Crianza has an excellent balance between the ripeness of the fruit and its ageing in barrels. It rests in selected barrels of fine-grained and soft toasted French and American oak to maintain the expression of the fruit to the maximum. After ageing, the wine is transferred to bottles to complete its refinement until it is ready to be tasted. It transmits aromas of ripe black fruit and soft spices of rosemary and clove. It is intense, tasty and very, very long-lasting in the mouth.

A Successful Prestigio

This is how the year of the Winery led by Carlos Moro can be described since the Matarromera Prestigio, another of the wines produced, has obtained 94 points in Wine Spectator, one of the highest scores of the year. This is a limited production wine with only 14,500 bottles from a specific plot, Matarromera's most special estate: Pago de las Solanas. It is only made in years in which the grapes and the vintage reach the quality required by the winery. It has an intense cherry colour and is a voluminous wine with toasted tones and very ripe fruit flavours, preserving a powerful body of sweet tannins with a long-lasting aftertaste. It can be considered one of the wines that best combines elegance and modernity of this traditional winery located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, specifically in Valbuena de Duero, Valladolid.
