Nordic countries are highly environmentally conscious and much stricter when it comes to environmental legislation. Having supplied various airlines (Iberia, American Airlines, British Airways, etc.) with wines, the company has developed the desire to introduce their products onto new markets that possess greater environmental awareness.
To develop eco-designs, for vineyards and wineries alike, to reduce the emission of greenhouse (GHG) gases in wineries and to study the viability of using PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) for marketing wine on Norwegian airlines.
This project therefore has two aims: to reduce emissions and energy consumption involved in the production process by 20% relative to current levels, and to develop a major innovative product that makes use of a new packaging material for wines – PEG – which features improved properties relative to PET (a synthetic material commonly used in drinks bottles), including: higher thermal resistance, better insulating properties and a longer product lifespan (better protection against the entry of O2, CO2 and water vapour from the environment into the bottle), as well as being lighter than PET and in turn far lighter than glass.
Studying the viability of using PEG in wine bottling, implementing eco-designs, quantifying GHG emissions and the energy efficiency of processes using eco-designs, studying the economic viability of utilising PEG in the wine-making industry and creating a guide for good practice.
Development of more eco-friendly packaging that boasts higher thermal resistance, is completely recyclable and has a lower impact on the environment. Reduction of both waste and the environmental impact of packaging through use of PEG, a new environmentally friendly product obtained from food and farming by-products.
An important reduction in the company’s carbon footprint; a reduced environmental impact resulting from the manufacture of wine and greater competitiveness and diversity in the face of competition.
